Every great agricultural company starts with a frustration. For Eutrema, that frustration was the disconnect between cutting-edge plant science and what was actually ending up in the hands of growers.
Eutrema was founded by Dr Russell Sharp, a plant scientist, innovator, and former University Lecturer. Having spent years in academia teaching the next generation of agronomists, and executing field research on everything from hydroponic wasabi to sustainable textile crops, Dr Sharp saw a recurring problem in the industry: the science was getting lost in the supply chain.
Too often, farmers and gardeners were forced to buy products that had been diluted, rebranded, and marked up by a long line of middlemen. The market was full of “magic bullet” and crazy trade name marketing, but short on transparency, genuine innovation, and high-quality raw ingredients.
Dr Sharp decided it was time to bridge the gap between the laboratory and the soil.
From the Lecture Hall and Laboratory to the Blending Unit
Dr Sharp established Eutrema with a single, uncompromising goal: to manufacture science-driven, commercial-grade plant health products and sell them directly to the people who actually use them.
Today, Eutrema operates as a primary manufacturer out of state of the art facility in Leicestershire. By inventing, formulating, and mixing our own bio-based biostimulants, and complex fertiliser blends in-house, we retain absolute control over quality.
We don’t just put a label on someone else’s product. We build our solutions from the ground up to tackle the real-world challenges growers face; from overcoming cold-weather “spring lag” to fighting invasive black grass.
The Eutrema Philosophy
Whether you are a commercial wheat farmer managing thousands of acres, or a dedicated home gardener chasing the perfect lawn, our approach is exactly the same:
- Grower First: Your plant’s health is our priority. We sell factory-direct to ensure you get premium, undiluted products without the premium middleman markup.
- Driven by Innovation: We use next-generation chemistry and advanced biostimulants to create stronger, healthier, and more resilient crops.
- Radical Transparency: No secret ingredients or vague promises. We tell you exactly what is in the drum and the exact biological mechanism of how it will help your plants.
Meet the Founder: Selected Research & Innovations
Before founding Eutrema, Dr Russell Sharp built an extensive academic and field research portfolio, in institutions like Lancaster University and the East Malling Research Station. His work has frequently been featured by the BBC, The Independent, and leading peer-reviewed journals.
His career highlights include:
- Advanced Biostimulants: Conducted extensive research on the use of chitosan as a highly effective biostimulant and bio-fungicide.
- Plant Stress Responses: Researched how the pH of xylem sap affects a plant’s ability to biologically respond to environmental stress.
- Heritage Crop Restoration: Successfully resurrected the historically significant ‘Blaby Special‘ and ‘Manx Marvel‘ heritage tomato varieties.
- Soil Microbiology: Researched Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) in ornamental crops to naturally improve plant quality and resilience.
- Doctoral Research: Investigated the hormonal and environmental control of flowering in Rhododendron.
- Farm Diversification: Pioneered research into the cultivation of Chinese yams as a commercially viable new crop for English farm diversification.
- Sustainable Textiles: Investigated the commercial potential of growing native nettles and flax in the UK as an environmentally sustainable alternative to imported cotton.
- Hydroponic Innovation: Developed methodologies for the successful cultivation of Wasabi and Marsh Samphire in commercial hydroponic systems.
- Unique Pollination Mechanisms: Studied the rare pollination of Asarum and Aspidistra by molluscs (slugs and snails) across Poland, Japan, and California.
